Prof. Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha is a renowned transplant pioneer in Nepal. His visionary leadership and unparalleled surgical expertise have been the driving force behind making advanced organ care accessible to the Nepalese people.

Major Contributions to Nepal’s Healthcare System

Prof. Dr. Shrestha has dedicated his career to building and expanding transplant services in Nepal. His landmark achievements and pioneering milestones include:

  • Establishing National Infrastructure: He founded the government hospital, Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Centre (SDNTC), and established the Kidney Transplant Unit at Bir Hospital.

  • Pioneering Procedures: He successfully introduced liver transplantation services to Nepal. Additionally, he initiated brain-death donor kidney and liver transplantation, as well as paired kidney exchange transplants in the country.

  • Unmatched Surgical Record: He has conducted more than two-thirds of all transplants in Nepal to date. His track record includes 1,600 kidney transplants with a remarkable 99% success rate, and 35 liver transplants with a 93% success rate.

  • Policy & Leadership: He played a key role in formulating Nepal’s modern Transplant Act and regulations. He is also the President of the Nepalese Society of Organ Transplantation (NESOT) and has served as the Former Chairman of the Organ Transplant Co-ordination Committee (OTCC) for the Government of Nepal.

  • Pioneered transplant services in Nepal at par with the World standards, after training in Birmingham and Newcastle for 6 years. Resigned from a Senior Registrar position at prestigious Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, UK to return home.

Beyond the operating room, Prof. Dr. Shrestha is a passionate advocate for public health and social justice:

  • Affordable Care: He established affordable kidney and liver transplant services in Nepal and expanded dialysis services across the country.

  • National Awareness: He is the national lead campaigner for organ donation and transplantation awareness, inspiring a movement for health equity and the prevention of non-communicable diseases.

  • Advocacy for the Vulnerable: He is a dedicated advocate for the health of migrant workers, ensuring that vulnerable populations are not left behind in receiving critical care.
